Charro boots are part of the attire of the Mexican Charro . While boots have accompanied men throughout history in their work in the fields, offering protection and comfort, it was during the Colonial era that this type of footwear arrived in Mexico as a legacy of Navarrese and Andalusian horsemen.

Charro boots are recognized worldwide because they are part of the iconic charro outfit. Authentic charro boots are made almost entirely from natural materials, with the spring and the toe cap being the only synthetic components. In the 1940s and 1950s, they were commonly worn for all occasions, even for suits. In the city, ankle boots with a zipper were worn, while for the countryside and charrería, spring boots were most commonly worn.

Charrería originated in the haciendas of the states of Hidalgo, – the birthplace of Charrería -, Puebla and the State of Mexico, later spreading throughout New Spain and flourishing in the Viceroyalty of New Galicia, – current State of Jalisco and its surroundings.

Later, little by little, Charrería grew as the use of horses became more widespread among the inhabitants of our country, where landowners and their trusted servants showed off their expertise and skill in handling the animals, performing useful and valuable maneuvers with courage, bravery, and skill.

Professional Charrería originated in 1880, when the famous "Charro Ponciano" appeared, whose exploits we recognize from corridos and songs. His name was Ponciano Díaz, originally from the Hacienda de Atenco in the state of Hidalgo—the first cattle ranch established in the Americas—and he gave great impetus and growth to Charrería, transforming it into a spectacle of bravery and skill worthy of admiration. He combined Charrería with bullfighting, and was thus the first to perform the banderillas on horseback. This event was invented by Ignacio Gadea, another Mexican charro who belonged to Don Ponciano Díaz's team, along with Agustín and Vicente Oropeza, Celso González, Vicente Conde, and Manuel González Aragón, pioneers of modern Charrería. He traveled with him to Spain in 1889 to give a Mexican-style Charrería and bullfighting exhibition.
